Butterfly Bush - A plant that blooms all summer6/28/2012

Want a plant that blooms all summer?

We often get asked for a shrub that will bloom all summer long.  Most gardeners will already know that that is a tall order to fill, as most blooming plants have a bloom time of roughly 2 to 3 weeks. However there are a few choices that we can recommend that will bloom endlessly throughout the summer and even offer some added bonuses.  The Butterfly bush and the hydrangea are two shrubs that will surely not disappoint.

The Butterfly Bush tends to interest humans, butterflies and hummingbirds.  The birds and insects come in search of the sweet nectar and we humans are attracted to the bright flower in colors of blues, reds and purples as well as the plethora of butterflies and hummingbirds that seem to dance amid the blooms.  The butterfly bush was once known as a plant that will get huge when planted, now comes in a variety of manageable dwarf and low growing species.

The blooms can be described as bottle-brush spike-like flower that exudes a fragrance much like a lilac.  The plant is a fast grower and standard varieties can reach 4 to 5 feet in the second year of planting.  The butterfly bush is easy to care for and equally easy to grow.    To keep the plant looking it's best, you will want to dead head the flowers after they have bloomed, as they will not fall off on their own.  This will also encourage new growth and more flowers.
